Do you have a minute?

Flavia Formica

So much can happen in one minute. A life begins, a life ends. Eyes connect, hearts break, you might be moved to laughter or moved to tears. You win, you lose, you give up, you decide to try just one more time.

Minutes tick by and we can become too busy to note their passing. Before we know it, it’s midday, it’s midnight, it’s the dawning of a new day.

Our lives move at such a pace that these days we need to apologise for “not” being busy. When asked if I have had a busy day and I reply “no”, I’ve noticed that some people don’t know how to respond. Busy is our new normal and somewhere along the line we’ve bought into the idea that this is where we need to be.

So, I invite you to try something that might be new for you. I invite you to pause. Whatever you’re doing pause. Find the timer on your everpresent mobile phone and time just one minute.

Don’t do anything, just pause and breathe. Allow your mind to settle and your pulse to slow down. Be present in that one minute.

Then go back to whatever you were doing and note any difference in your sense of presence and clarity. Eventually, you might increase the regularity of your pauses and who knows you might even pause for longer.

Live mindfully. Try to be present as the minutes tick past because they are precious and fleeting. You’ve got a minute and a minute can be life changing.
